We travelled further south on the Pan-American Highway, which at one point was blocked by haulage protesters with riot police in attendance.

After we'd turned off from the highway we came to a weak bridge, which meant we all had to get out of the minibus, so it could cross unburdened...

Henry bringing the bus across...

We stayed at Esquinas Rainforest Lodge in cabins with mesh instead of windows, the lodge had a pond with 2 Caiman that were free to roam at will. The swimming pool was stream-fed complete with tadpoles and freshwater crabs. At night we saw frogs in there - it was wonderful.

Male Basilisk Lizard basks outside our cabin...

Bats above the beer fridge in the honesty bar in the main lodge...

We went for a walk in the afternoon past another pond with a resident Caiman and a number of feisty snapping turtles...

These cuties have quite a bite and were quick to have a snap at Graham's walking pole...

There were fish in the pool too...

There were many Leafcutter Ant trails criss-crossing the path, carrying their oversized loads.

A Leaf Mantis in the main lodge building, we watched this chap feast on bugs attracted to the lights...

We went on a night walk with Chico a local guide, our group were made to don wellies to wade through a nearby stream in search of night time hunters and prey. However within 15 feet of the lodge we found a highly poisonous Fer-de-Lance snake. We found other snakes, wolf spiders, a large variety of frogs & toads of all sizes as well as a large Spectacled Owl that was recovering from a fight.

We weren't allowed to use our camera flashes on the night walk., so photo's were tricky.

A pretty poor photo, but as it's of an iconic Red Eyed Leaf Frog, I had to include it - at least the red eyes can be seen...
