Approaching the surface and silhouetted by the sun... when we did surface we'd all been scattered in different ways by the strong current and it took 40 minutes to find everyone in the bright sun...

Dive 18 - Lankan Manta Point - North Male Atoll

Last dive of the trip was a return to the spot where we'd seen so many Mantas on the first day. I managed to not see any on this dive! I did see a Napoleonfish and a Whitetip Shark.

Dolphin Watching

My disappointment in not seeing the Mantas was alleviated by seeing a large (100ish) pod of dolphins doing what comes naturally to them... 

 

Male

It felt strange to be on dry land and again as we undertook a quick, hot, mapless tour of Male. We managed to buy an ice cream, but that was about it.

The breakwater was inhabited by thousands of crabs and discarded plastic bottles...

Back to the MV Orion (centre). In a bizarre move an upright piano was loaded onto the boat on the last night..

The sun sets quickly and was dark by 6pm...

Returning home - another of the Maldives' incongruities, the island in the distance is where they burn all the rubbish and it has a constant plume of smoke above it...

 

Flying higher, a more traditional atoll view. I hope to be back soon...
