After a 03:30 start - Miche at T3 - Ray Mears was sitting just to the left of us...

The mountains as we approached Tromso...

We were picked up by Oyston and headed to his storage unit to be kitted out in survival suits and fancy boots - it had been -36 the night before, so it was worth wrapping up.

We then drove for a couple of hours to find a good spot in the less cloudy, leeward side of the mountains.

First glimpses of the Aurora...

As ever the cameras enhance the colours to a greater extent than you see them with a naked eye, but it was still a spectacular display...

You can just make out the trace of a shooting star in between the two beams...

We had the lights in a band around us for 3 or 4 hours...

We were very lucky and the lights were the most active that had been seen since Christmas...

This was the only photo that I took at the peak of their activity, the rest of the time I just stared in awe and made sure that I took in the moment...
