Crabs, Cliff Walks & Crustacean Cuisine

This one's shell had come off which gave it a distinctly alien look...

The crabs had been dead for quite a while and their shells had faded...

They're so-called 'living fossils', related to the long extinct Trilobites...

Clearly the spot for dead crabs, a Spider crab this time...

Looking back across Easton's Beech, the trees and church on the hill gave it an English look...

Miche never misses a plaque if an opportunity arises...

The walk takes you past a series of huge mansions from the turn of the last century, when the wealthy in-crowd used to migrate here for legendary partying...

I was determined to be unimpressed by the mansions, but some of them were draw-droppingly huge... quite a summer retreat...

This circular one on a promontory near the end of the walk was probably my favourite...

I liked the graffiti on this former fire station...

We spent ages deciding on where to take on our first lobster of the trip and after much walk-by comparison, we plumped for this place...

We were lucky and had a great table on the edge of the harbour...

Our first and possibly best lobster of the trip accompanied by Quahog clams, which were also delicious...

We took a cruise around Newport in the afternoon for a different perspective...

The yacht with the helicopter on it belongs to Oprah Winfrey, though she very rarely uses it...

Sea side view of Fort Adams, built back when Newport was less keen on English tourists...

More mansions - this couple could decide between the Scottish castle look and traditional New England, so did a bit of both. It's not just the size of the mansions that was a surprise, but the number of them and the fact that the vast majority are still private residenses today...

We ate in the White Horse Tavern, which claims to be the oldest tavern in the USA...
