On our non-dive day we took a taxi 80 miles north, past the Dead Sea to the Nabataean city of Petra.

We unexpectedly stopped on a mountainside overlooking a rocky barren desert on the way there; the taxi driver opened the boot and took out a flask of hot sugary tea, which we drank in the complete silence of the surroundings - it was the most refreshing cup of tea I've ever had.

Walking through the Siq ("the Shaft")  that leads to rose-red city of Petra itself. They filmed a famous horse-chase scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark in this gorge...

Looking up to the skies...

First glimpse of the Treasury (Al Khazneh)...

The bright light contrasts to the shadows of the Siq...

I had wanted to visit Petra since I was a small child and it didn't disappoint...

Inside the Treasury...

Phil and the Street of Facades...

On the stage of the Theatre...

The Silk Tomb...

The Palace Tomb...

Up close to the sandstone and its beautiful striations...

A particularly large American lady is placed on top of a small donkey to carry her up the many steep steps to the Monastery in 90+ degree temperatures...

Monastery (Ad Deir), we walked up...
