Saturday - Travel Wednesday - South Coast
Monday - Golden Circle Thursday - Reykjavik & Northern Lights 
Tuesday - Snorkel Friday - Reykjavik

 

First stop, a drive down the Reykjanes Peninsula towards Grindavik and the Blue Lagoon.

The drive is through a huge lava field, but that was all covered in snow and lit by a winter 11:20 sunrise. There were still buckled ripples that broke through the snow and hinted of what lay beneath.

Lagoon side bar - we had a Blue Lagoon cocktail (white wine, Blue Curacao & lemonade)...





The floor of the pool was covered in sand, volcanic rocks and occasional sumps of gooey silica/mud/algae.

There were also purer silica & mud mixes in tubs that you could apply as a mask.

Northern Lights

We took one of the bigger operators tours for our first attempt at seeing the Northern Lights. The forecast was for broken cloud cover and lowish intensity.

No sooner had the guide had announced that the trip had failed to spot them, than they appeared over a mountain, we all rushed out of the large coach in the biting wind and saw them relatively fleetingly before they were obscured by an incoming snowstorm (we saw a less intense, but more stable band as we approached Reykjavik and looked back).
