Return to Reykjavik & Northern Lights - Part 1

Hallgrímskirkja

This stunning church dominates the Reykjavik skyline...

The building was being wired up inside for a concert - including a keyboard in the belltower...

Views from the top...

View across to the Perlan - a restaurant perched on 6 water tanks...

I jumped out of my skin when the bells chimed unexpectedly while we were in the tower...

Hallgrímskirkja and the statue of Liefr Eriksson...

To celebrate Christmas, there were holograms of some of the 13 'Yule Lads', based on Icelandic folklore. They've had a PR makeover in recent years from the slightly disturbing reputation they had before. Their names still give some clue though including: Window Peeper, Sausage Swiper, Sniffer, Spoon Licker, etc.

There's also a Christmas Cat that eats naughty children; that's the trouble in the UK, the fairy tales have gone soft.

Northern Lights - second trip

After a stop elsewhere we returned to the crater at Kerid and waited.

The fullish moon and snow cover accentuated light pollution...

The forecast wasn't looking too promising, so I resorted to taking photo's of the minibus to keep my hands moving...

However, all of a sudden we were conscious that we were looking at the Northern Lights in an area of sky that wasn't showing anything a few moments before...

I did forget to change the ISO settings, which may have cost me some clearer shots. I will take a camera with a shutter timer greater than 30 seconds next time...
