After many hours and just when we thought they were going to give the lick a miss for the day... A pioneer...

They have to be wary, predators are also aware of the daily visits - there are old parrots and there are bold parrots.

Another joins the intrepid first...

Once checked out, more and more Macaws came down to take on their daily minerals...

 

It was an amazing sight...

Soon the whole lick was covered - I'm not really a birdwatcher, but this was one of two wildlife highlights for me on this trip...

... and then they were off, not sure if they'd had their fill, or whether something had spooked them, but they flew off in one huge colourful mass...
 

 

Back across the sticky mud, techniques and areas to be avoided identified after the earlier chaotic crossing...

Back to the boats for the long journey back...

Back at Camp Cayman

Mosquito nets and ceiling mesh to keep other insects & creatures out...

The huts were basic, with no electricity or hot water, but they were comfortable and the candles did a good job. That said, I'd have loved a cool pool of water to lay in to escape the humidity (the river wasn't an option, not a good one anyway)...

An Agouti at dusk, we had been warned about animals that would come into our rooms after food - therefore we had to keep it all in baskets at the central lodge - I had assumed the animals in question would be mice or rats, rather than these small cat-sized agoutis...
