Intipata

We'd seen the many concentric terraces of Intipata from on high the day before, it was even more impressive up close...

Getting closer

me

Looking down to the base, where a Llama had taken residence in the fanciest of the dwellings...

Miche & Bobby on a terrace...

Terrace

More terracing next to the river - the produce had to be carried up to the buildings high in the valley...

Looking down

Miche & Bobby on another terrace - the flying steps can just be made out on the right-hand terraces...

and down

Our group coming down the steep steps to the base...

Up

Looking back up as the site hugs the contours of the slope - these terraces were only built on slopes with favourable aspects to maximise the growing potential...

Tiers

Llama and calf...

Winaywayna (also known as 'Little Machu Picchu')

The steps and the Sun had taken its toll and only a few of us took the short walk to Winaywayna (which means 'Forever Young' in Quechan).

The site is on a truly vertiginous slope...

Winaywayna 1

Well preserved dwellings...

Winaywayna 2

The very impressive cascade of Inca fountains...

Winaywayna 3

Part of the channel to the fountains still in working order...

Winaywayna 13

The fountains take their water from the stream in the centre of the picture; it's moved across the contours of the slope to the right in channels and the fountains drop it down to the dwellings lower down the slope...

Winaywayna 4

Miche on one of the terraces...

Winaywayna 5

Me in a typical Inca double layer doorway...

Winaywayna 6

Did I mention that the slope was precipitous?

I don't fear heights, but just looking at this photo makes my stomach lurch (though that may be the memory of the under-ripe fuchsia berry that I ate at the site - I'll spare the detail)...

Winaywayna 7

Miche & the super steep terracing...

Winaywayna 8

Looking out to the Urubamba...

Winaywayna 9

Kristine in an Inca window...

Winaywayna 9

Miche enjoying its trapezoidal wonders too..

Winaywayna 10

Well, if everyone else is doing it...

Winaywayna 11

Who wouldn't be tempted to sit in one and enjoy the view?
