Return to - day 16 - Part 1 - Uros Islands

We reached Amantani Island in the early afternoon and headed to the main square with its old church.

After lunch, we were assigned our homestays.

Miche, Ros, Kristine, Sally and I were assigned to the lovely Flore and her daughter Milly.

Miche in our doorway - it was as if it was made for her...

Less so for me...

However, I was entranced by the unripe granadilla fruit that hung just outside - even if they did create an extra element when creeping off to the outside toilet in the dead of night...

Beautiful window & view...

Granadillas, on the vine...

We had the option of climbing to the top of the island or staying around the homestay & village - our little group chose the latter and we were glad we did.

Local tradition has it that to be fit for marriage the prospective bride has to be able to peel the most gnarly potato in less than a minute.

Here Miche gives it a good go, of our group, only Ros came close and coincidentally was the only one that had married - so maybe there was some truth in it. For my part after a bold first peel, I floundered terribly and it was probably only fit for the compost heap by the time I finished much later.

We also tried or just watched the crocheting of fuchsia flowers, before retiring to the village bar for a little refreshment - it was a really pleasant afternoon, who'd have thought potato peeling would be so much fun...

We searched the island, well the immediate vicinity at least, for a good spot to watch the sunset and settled on the front step of a lady's shop - somewhat to her annoyance until we bought some snacks...

Then it was back to the bar and its unfeasibly small toilet in a cupboard - 'Beware of the head'...

Here the bar owner is enjoying his Pisco Sour making and his young accountant-in-the-making daughter kept all our bills in good order. The Pisco Sours were great and the bar had a wonderful atmosphere...

After dinner at the homestay we went to another house for an evening of traditional music and dancing...

The fire was very welcome, but it gave off some pretty eye-watering smoke at times...

Soon we were all up displaying a variety of dancing skills...
